Jesuit Collaborative

A Message from Jim Conroy, S.J.

Dear Friend of The Jesuit Collaborative,

In his recent book, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life, Jim Martin, S.J. writes, “Jesuits take their cue from Ignatius in terms of a practical spirituality.  One joke has a Franciscan, a Dominican, and a Jesuit celebrating Mass together when the lights suddenly go out in the church.  The Franciscan praises the chance to live more simply.  The Dominican gives a learned homily on how God brings light to the world.  The Jesuit goes to the basement to fix the fuses.”

The Jesuit Collaborative is taking a practical approach to making this practical spirituality more available to people by training men and women to direct the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and by connecting people with the Exercises in its various formats in different ways, e.g., prayer-reflection days, meditations, leadership formation programs, various kinds of Ignatian retreats, workshops, etc.  The Spiritual Exercises provide an extraordinary encounter with God in companionship with Jesus.

Below are links to a prayer by Pedro Arrupe, S.J., former Father General of the Society of Jesus, and the Examen.  I hope you find them useful in developing your relationship with God and neighbor.  What could be more practical?

As we approach the close of this calendar year, I invite you to help advance the mission and work of The Jesuit Collaborative by making a gift.  As St. Paul writes, “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” (2 Cor. 9:11).  Even a seemingly small act of generosity can grow into something far beyond what we could ever ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20).

With thanks and prayers,
Jim Conroy, S.J.
