Discerning the Future of the Ministry

Society of Jesus

The process of discerning how to move forward in the ministry of the Spiritual Exercises throughout the three East Coast provinces began recently in New York with full-day sessions in Rochester and New York City.  On June 19th, approximately 30 people met at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, and on June 26th, approximately 40 people gathered at Regis High School in Manhattan.

Participants came from a broad range of institutions and organizations involved in the ministry including retreat centers, parishes, colleges, and other Jesuit ministries.  The process of communal discernment involved prayerful reflection and discussion on the experience of the ministry with the goal of identifying desolations and "unfreedoms", consolations and invitations, and concrete steps based on the consolations and invitations.

This communal discernment on the ministry of the Exercises is a three-phase process.  The sessions at McQuaid and Regis constituted Phase 1 in New York.  The process will proceed to Phase 2 in New York this fall.  Phase 1 will commence in New England in October.
